Mobile Number Portability ( MNP)

Mobile Number Portability or MNP allows mobile number users to migrate from their current mobile network operator to another without having to change their mobile number. In other words, MNP is a process of having the current mobile number even after changing the service provider. It provides freedom to mobile phone users to change their network operator without the fear of losing their current mobile number. In case of any inconvenience with your current network operator, this technology helps you to switch to a new service provider.

Mobile number portability service can be availed by both prepaid and postpaid customers in India. This service works well on both GSM and CDMA platforms.

Six simple steps of Mobile Number Portability or MNP

Step 1.

First, you need to send an SMS “PORT” followed by your mobile number to the number 1900. For instance, if you want an MNP for the mobile number 1234567890, then your SMS has to be PORT 1234567890

Step 2.

You will receive an SMS that consists of a unique porting code.

Step 3.

Send the received unique porting code as an SMS to the network operator of your choice. One has to note that this code will be valid only for a limited period from the date of receiving it. Hence SMS the porting code to your preferred operator at the earliest or else you may have to again apply for the new porting code.

Step 4.

Your current network operator will check for any dues from your side and then looks for your preferred service provider and finally gives approval for porting.

Step 5.

You will receive an SMS with the time and date for porting. The process of Mobile Number Portability or MNP shall not exceed 4 days from the date of first SMS as per current regulations. For the MNP process to proceed, you will also have to submit a filled MNP form to your preferred service provider in addition to some documents supporting your identity and address proof.

Step 6.

After the porting process is completed, you will get a switch confirmation SMS from your preferred service provider. When porting takes place, your phone may be dead for about 2 hours. When the phone comes live, you will still have the old mobile number but under the new operator.

It has to noted that you can avail Mobile Number Portability or MNP only once in every 90 days.

Note: After switching to the new provider, your mobile number may not update with the new operator in some internet tools that provide details of the search phone number services like phone number tracer, reverse phone lookup, phone directory, trace phone number, phone number finder, etc.
